Abstract
Responding to the recent research hype in and around generative artificial intelligence (GAI), we argue that an in-depth understanding of the topic requires contextualization and historicization, nuance, and feeling, that comes only from knowing theories old and new. To that end, we have interviewed two leading global theorists, George Ritzer and J. Michael Ryan, regarding their insights related to McDonaldization and AI, including around topics of production, consumption, and prosumption, data and social justice, education, and postdigital citizen science
